A Winter Cleanse – Part 2

I’m 9 days into my cleanse and I thought I’d share an update. If you missed my first post on why I’m doing the cleanse and what it involves you can find it here.

So I’ve done this cleanse (or a version of it) for the past several years and each time there are differences. Differences in the way I feel, what I crave or miss, and in the difficulty of accomplishing the goal.

This time around I’m finding the preparation, cooking, and the process of the cleanse easier. I don’t have to think about it so much, I already have several recipes that I know we like and that I can easily pull together. I also made a concerted effort this time to take it easy on myself by sticking to a few simple recipes and being satisfied with those, salads, dips, and plain fruits and vegetables. So the actual process of the cleanse has been going smoothly.

I’ve also been feeling really good. I was a little tired and headachy the first 2-3 days but I knew to expect that. My stomach was also pretty upset for a few days. That was something that I had not experienced before but I realized that this time around my eating had been far from normal over the past few months so changing to a diet of mostly produce was a drastic change for my body to handle. At this point, I have more energy, don’t feel quite so blah and bloated, and my skin is clearer and brighter.

As for cravings, I haven’t had too many. What I have craved has mostly been carbs – bread, crackers – which I know to be my comfort foods. Last weekend was a little difficult as it had been a very long week and on Friday night I really wanted to curl up on the couch with a glass of wine. But it helps to have a partner and my husband has been doing the cleanse right along with me so we stayed strong together and had tea instead!

One thing that I am focusing on this week is eating mindfully. This post on Mindful Momma reminded of the importance of really paying attention to what I am putting in my mouth. Even during a cleanse it’s easy to shovel in the veggies and hummus or handfuls of popcorn without even thinking about it. I am hoping that getting into the habit of slowing down and being mindful while I eat will help me to eat with intention and appreciate the food when I do.

I have another few days to go before the cleanse is officially over but right now I’m feeling very good about it! And for those who want more specific details on what I’ve been eating I will be posting in the next couple of days with the full run-down of my meals.
